GENERATIONS OF HANDMADE POTTERY
Hague Ceramics is the work of Malcolm Hague, a designer and maker whose life is shaped by a family devoted to English ceramics.
Malcolm’s passion for clay, form, and design comes from a heritage that stretches back to 1893.
His grandfather, Reuben Earnest Hague, began his career at just thirteen as an apprentice painter at Royal Crown Derby porcelain. He trained under the French artist Désiré Leroy from Sèvres, who was celebrated across Europe for his skill and precision.
Reuben’s dedication to craftsmanship set a standard that has guided the family for generations.
Malcolm’s father, Douglas Hague, also continued the family tradition as a pottery maker and designer.
Malcolm carries that legacy forward and has developed a distinctive approach to ceramics.
REVIVING THE ART OF ENGLISH CERAMICS
Hague Ceramics was founded by Malcolm to revive skills and traditions that have diminished in recent years.
Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, was once the world capital of ceramics. Today, much of the industry has moved abroad. Skills that took generations to perfect have been lost, and many of the artisans who once sustained the potteries have moved on.
By producing every piece in Staffordshire using clays and glazes, and making small batches by hand, Malcolm ensures that the craft remains firmly rooted in its home region.
Each piece reflects centuries of knowledge and careful handwork. It demonstrates a commitment to preserving the heritage of handmade pottery and English ceramics.
A STAND AGAINST MASS PRODUCTION
The ceramics industry is now dominated by items manufactured quickly, cheaply, and often without concern for quality or longevity.
Malcolm sees this as a loss of skill and artistry. By focusing on small-batch, handcrafted pieces, he ensures that handmade pottery stands apart from the disposable standard. His work offers beauty, durability, and meaning in ways that factory-made ceramics cannot.
Large-scale industrial production consumes huge amounts of energy, water, and raw materials. It also creates significant waste.
By contrast, careful, considered production reduces unnecessary resource use and avoids the environmental toll of mass manufacturing.

OUR HANDMADE POTTERY PROCESS
Every piece at Hague Ceramics is designed by Malcolm Hague and made entirely by hand in his studio in Staffordshire.
All materials, from the clay to the glazes, come from Staffordshire producers.
The journey from clay to finished piece involves multiple stages. Each stage requires skill and patience. Every item passes through nine careful production stages over a ten-day cycle. Small batches ensure that all ceramics receive the time, attention, and care they deserve.
Malcolm maintains a consistent level of quality while embracing the natural variations that arise from manual production.
This hands-on process defines handmade pottery. It sets it apart from mass-produced alternatives and reinforces the enduring value of English ceramics.
